In the Heights
The San Diego Rep opened its 38th season with a spectacular production that must rank with its finest. Gentrification threatens a diverse group of largely Latino neighbors at uptown Manhattan's 183rd St. Change looms, and when someone wins the lottery, all make strong cases for the prize. Led by multi-talented Jai Rodriguez, as the narrator Usnavi, a stellar cast sings and dances (to Javier Velasco's excellent choreography) and fills the house with exuberance. The evening seems to grow with every song. And when the cast sings "96,000," in Act one, you'd think it's an impossible act to follow. Nope, Susan Denaker follows it with "Paciencia y Fe". After that, well a tough act to follow follows every tough act to follow. At show's end, it's a wonder the Lyceum Stage still has a roof.
