The Imaginary Invalid
Argan is a quack doctor's cash cow. He never met a symptom he didn't embrace. Argan's such a hypochondriac he wants his daughter to marry a doctor, to have one close at hand. Argan and quacks everywhere have their comeuppance in Fiasco Theatre's sprightly, multi-talented remake of Moliere'sThe Imaginary Invalid(1673). Like PigPen Theatre next door at the Old Globe, Fiasco excels in physical comedy (much derived from thelazzi --gags and shtick -- of Commedia dell/Arte)and surprisingly accomplished musicianshipin interludes, and especially when all seven strut their skills for an "improvised' opera.Invalidisn't one of Moliere's better comedies. He wrote it shortly before he died. But thanks to Fiasco's always imaginative, always funny show, you'd never know it. Or that this is its world premiere.Critic's Pick.
