Hurlyburly
Four men gather at a house in the Hollywood Hills, early 1980s, to trash women and, for variety, each other. If they can't find "clarity," they'll take "oblivion," egged on by cocaine, weed, and whiskey. Problem is: they can't stop analyzing every spec of their lives for significance. They'd rather "discuss the experience," as the saying went, than have one. Actors love David Rabe's comedy-drama-blizzard for its juicy roles, but few producers dare to stage its incessant, three hour, mean-spirited mania (so mean-spirited you want to shout "enough, already!"). Ion Theatre's full-bore, let-God-sort-it-out production ranks among its finest. Fran Gercke's Eddie's the consummate narcissist, an outstanding effort. Well directed by Glenn Paris, the quality cast - especially Tom Hall as a hair-trigger thug and Karson St. John as an assertive stripper - turns Claudio Raygoza and Matt Scott's minutely detailed set into a war zone.
