Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
Hershey Felder's concert-biography of the great Gershwin is sketchy on details. Felder prefers biographies of the songs and their inner workings. One of the values of Gershwin Alone is its emphasis on music appreciation. Felder, whose high forehead makes him a cross between Gershwin and George S. Kaufman, gives a loud and brash performance. An expert pianist, when he plays Rhapsody in Blue, Felder hammers the Steinway keys like an anvil and generates raw beauty from the often prettified score. His singing voice favors a too strudent attack, however. He performs on Yale Pardess's jazzy set - a rug corner spearing up the back wall - angle-lit by Michael T. Gilliam's mood-enhancing patterns.
