Heroes
987-D Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach, 92075
Yes, heroes, but 41 years after the fact. Three World War I veterans are patients in an old soldiers home in rural France. Gerald Sibleyara's impressionistic piece (translated by Tom Stoppard) combines light farce with pathos as they scheme to break out of what's become a prison. The North Coast Rep has cast three heroes of regional theater: Ken Ruta, Ray Reinhardt, and Jonathan McMurtry. Although the pace often dragged when I caught the show, the trio created some very funny moments and linked Heroes with Sartre's No Exit (in which "hell is other people"), and Waiting for Godot.
Worth a try.
