Henry V
The brand new, New Fortune Theatre Company has made an impressive opening statement. Richard Baird, the artistic director (and director of the piece) gives a dynamic, complex, and touching performance as the young King, at once "this Star of England" and an increasingly savvy politico who learns how to rule on the job. The King's as diverse as the kingdom he must unite, since his subjects speak a linguistic hodgepodge of accents and must set aside lifelong animosities to win the Battle of Agincourt, which Matt Lescault-Wood's sound design recreates in modern terms (bombs boom, jets streak overhead). Led by Baird, an outstanding cast - standouts include Matt Thompson, Jessica John, Amanda Schaar, and Dana Hooley) performs almost the entire text, which could make for a long evening if the pacing weren't so swift and the acting choices so fresh and bold and felt. Critic's Pick.
