Heddatron

Ion Theatre's production of Elizabeth Meriwether's manic, three-ring circus makes up in audacity what it sometimes lacks in polish. "Self-aware" robots want to stage Ibsen's Hedda Gabler in a rain forest with a depressed housewife (Monique Gaffney) in the lead. The script calls for real robots (which, director Claudio Raygoza warns audiences, could break down and stop the show). Although the staging — and parts of the text — has dull spots and rough edges, it also sports mind-boggling surprises, including an excursion into la-la land when the various strands of the story suddenly entwine for a gawdy, unforgettable production number.
Worth a try.
