Is not beatin' in the Old Globe's world premiere musical, based on the songs of Huey Lewis and the News. Its been hyjacked. Tyler Mitchell and Jonathan A. Abrams have not only crammed the songs into a formulaic story, they have Broadway-ized the music, turning the band's intimate exchanges into show tunes, often with splashy production numbers.The story's so chipper (will Bobby become top dog at a corporation or return to his failing rock band?), the end is never in doubt, cardboard characters being so plyable. People unfamiliar with the music may enjoy the piece if they likedeliberatley commercial entertainment, with dollar signs for eyes, and theauthors can streamline a clunky book.
