The Happiest Place on Earth
Playwright Philip Dawkins shares a show-and-tell of his family's love affair with Disneyland, via projected photos. Jacque Wilke, the versatile star of this one-person piece, is a treat to watch as she transitions into various characters with aplomb. The show lacks punch due to its would-be profound musings on Disneyland as a metaphor for human happiness. In an interview, Dawkins said he is "trying to humanize the creation of the park, the humans behind the park." Yet nowhere in the 90-minute performance do we see this humanistic side of Disneyland or its workers. Despite these shortcomings, Diversionary Theatre deserves credit for taking a risk on an interesting concept, and for Jacque Wilke's stellar effort.Worth a try.
