Hairspray
A show can be amazing for a multituude of reasons: the writing, the message, the music. But when the reason is energy and talent of the cast? That's something to take note of. Innuendos, commentary, and well-timed nods to the audience made this 1960s musical about integration relevant to today's political climate. San Diego Musical Theatre's ensemble cast has too many actors to count, all with impeccable comedic timing, stunning vocals, fast and fun dance moves, and a palpable interaction with one another. The only oddness is disparate age ranges. But with diversity as a theme, one quickly gets past it. A sparse, well-designed set allows for the large cast to fill this small-ish stage without crowding. If you've seenHairspray before, you haven't seen it like this.Critic's Pick.
