Hairspray
It's 1962. Baltimore's Corny Collins Show allows blacks to perform only once a month. Through nonviolent means, Tracy Turnblad battles racism, social class, and acceptable body types and leads a democratization of the TV show. Moonlight's production gets the splash of the original but misses some of the sizzle. Many musical arrangements tend toward the bland and miss the style and bite of the time. Miking muted some voices. Positives: John Vaughn's choreography re-creates all the busy-hands, busy-feet dances; Kim Zolozabal's Tracy is nonstop; Randall Hickman and Doug Davis stop the show — twice — as Tracy's parents. Uncredited costumes and Byron J. Batista's hair and wig designs bring the period — 50 years ago — to life.
Worth a try.
