I've seen this wonderful musical from 30 rows back and in some ways prefer Ion Theatre's much more intimate staging. The big numbers aren't brassy, true. But the interpersonal exchanges gain depth. Backed by Wendy Thompson's indefatigable piano, the cast obviously relishes the enterprise. Katie Whalley (remember the name) gives young Louise a sweeping arc. Helena Marie Woods has a horse laugh that's priceless. Andy Collins is just right as Herbie, Mama Rose's devoted agent. And Linda Libby, you will become convinced long before she tears into the unforgettable "Rose's Turn," was born to play Mama Rose, the stage mother from hell.
