Gunmetal Blues: The Musical
Scott Wentworth (book), and Craig Bohmier and Marion Adler (music and lyrics) probably couldn't ask for a better production of their musical spoof of 1940s film noir at the North Coast Rep.. The design work -- Marty Burnett's coal black, run down, piano bar set, Alina Bokovikova's trench-coaty costumes, and Matt Novotny's excellent lighting -- create a fine atmosphere, over which fly jumbo jets (since the seedy bar is next to an airport). Kevin Bailey is terrific as Sam Gallahad, a dour gumshoe with a heart of gold. Sharon Rietkerk, as a passel of platinum blondes, and Jeffrey Rockwell, as lounge-lizard piano player Buddy Toupee, enliven throughout. And could more if the book wasn't built on warring genres: comic spoof of the language and attitudes of Philip Marlowe and the Continental Op; and a need to take cartooned figures seriously as well. The funny parts make the solemn ones feel longer. Worth a try.
