Guards at the Taj
2910 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, 92037
Cost: $29 - $82
A play of vast extremes, Rajiv Joseph's obsidian-black comedy begins at the birth of the Taj Mahal, where Humayun and Babur have been "dawn patrol" guards for years. The play is funny, tragic, and Grand Guignol gruesome. Its sweeping highs and lows can fascinate, if you don't let obviously skewed logistics intrude. Manu HNarayan (Humayan) and Babak Tafit (Babur) create a deft, odd-couple pairing of lifelong friends and polar opposites. Their exchanges, even when the story bleeds them of their humanity, are crisp. sly, and fully felt. Worth a try.
