Groundswell
A legacy of evil. Apartheid is over, but its effects remain in Ian Bruce's thought-provoking, slow-to-sizzle, 90-minute drama. As a north wind blows at a beachfront gatehouse on South Africa's west coast (ringing, then REALLY ringing a melodramatic bell), Thami (a poor black caretaker) and Johan (an injured diamond diver with a criminal record) conspire to scam $100,000 from Smith, a wealthy tourist forced into early retirement by the new government. They want shares in a diamond-bearing property (that may itself be a scam). The play moves in lazy, predictable stages, awakens repressed guilt, and builds to a start confrontation. Sharp performances — Owiso Odera (Thami), Antony Hagopian (Johan), and New Schmidke (Smith) — and Kyle Donnelly's fluid staging smooth over most rough spots.
Worth a try.
