Freedom of Speech
4545 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92116
Cost: $27
Eliza Jane Schneider always had a fascination with dialects (and has been many of the female voices on "South Park"). Starting in 1993, she has toured the country at least 10 times - and over 300,000 miles - interviewing everyone from a prostitute in a brothel to a polygamist with 30 children to an irate Vietnam vet. To her credit, Schneider refuses to judge her subjects, and like Anna Deavere Smith and SD's Hannah Logan, she recreates each with precision. Along with hearing from people you rarely hear in a theater, the 90-minute show builts a sense of weaving. Freedom of Speech is a quilt of conflicting patches, held together by Schneider's compassionate stitching.
