Father Comes Home From the Wars
444 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $25 - $52
This trilogy of plays about the African-American experience continues Susan Lori-Parks' assault on traditional theater and narrow expectations. She wants to strip away false assumptions about race, freedom, and equality. No "father" comes home, and there's only one war, for example, and her multi-faceted characters are out of your control. The plays follow Hero (is he?) to the Civil War and back home, where everything has changed (has it?). In each play Parks emancipates actors from conventional choices. Intrepid Theatre's opening night sided toward the safe but should have kicked things up by now for one of the most important works of our era. Critic's Pick.
