Evita
The San Diego Rep's big, bold opening night of Evita had some flaws (clarity of voices, in particular), but Marisa Matthews' outstanding performance as the enigmatic Eva Peron carried the show on wings of fire. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice make her rise from rags to fame to powermore a tabloid phenomenon than a detailed biography. Whenever she achieves something, Jeff Ricca's excellent Che (Guevara? Maybe not) undercuts it. The Sam Woodhouse-directed production gives the original a much needed balance, thanks to Javier Velasco's choreography, Sean Fanning's set , the stage pictures David Lee Cuthbert's lighting creates, Jason Maddy's Juan Peron, and a fine ensemble cast, including students from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.Critic's Pick.
