Every Brilliant Thing
The middle word in the title describes Ro Boddie's solo performance at Cygnet. For 90 intermissionless minutes he does just about every possible aspect of live theater -- act scripted material, dance, sing, even high-five everyone in the house -- all the while carrying on a conversation with the audience, which also means improvising and making their "characters" come alive. It's a tour de force (and some of the liveliest audience participation tactics I've ever seen. The subject is solemn: suicide and the effects on others. But the approach generates more laughter than most comedies. To overcome profound grief, Boddie's character makes a "list of things to live for in the world." I suggest you put Every Brilliant Thingon yours.Critic's Pick.
