Ether Dome
The discovery of ether as an anesthetic is a fascinating story. Not only that, it opens up many related topics, from patent rights to addiction, to treatment of women. Elizabeth Egloff tries to account for all these and more. In effect, Ether Dome is six plays in search of a through-line. Director Michael Wilson's obviously aware of the script's urge to fly off the handle. So he stages an occasional Grand Guignol operation scene, from pulling a tooth without ether to lancing a big cancerous tumor, which functions as a wake-up call. The large cast treats the project with respect, and the design work treats the Mandell Weiss Forum like the real Ether Dome, a surgical amphitheater at Massachusetts General. The play needs major surgery too. Right now it suffers from TMI.
