Emile: La Marquise Du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight
A real mixed bag. Though it does little else, Lauren Gunderson's comedy-drama retrieves this amazing, 18th century genius -- in math, physics, and science -- from history's gossip columns. Gabrielle-Emilie du Chatelet (1706-1749) comes back from the dead to find out if she was right, or loved, and which matters most. The play wavers between the two (Emilie tallies points on a large blackboard), but refuses to go deep. It's merely a superficial traipse, in Elisa Benzoni's elegant, cream-colored attire, except for JoAnne Glover's splendid Emilie. Glover almost manages to make the play seem more sophisticated than it is. Emilie is an "important" piece, but not a good one. Glover's expertly modulated performance, however, makes it worth seeing. Worth a try.
