Edward II
4545 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92116
"Was ever a king as overruled as I?" asks Edward II in Christopher Marlowe's subversive history play. Edward was next in line to be king but had neither the aptitude nor the desire. So he gave away lands and titles, most of them to his paramour, Piers Gaveston. For Diversionary Theatre, director Richard Baird has done an impressive thing: he staged this sweeping epic fluently — pageants and battles — in the small space. The production also boasts a find. Ross Helwig, who plunges the king into a monstrous wake-up call, excels as Edward.
Worth a try.
