Edgar & Annabel and Far Away
These one-acts, by Sam Holcroft and Caryl Churchill, have so much in common they feel like deliberate companion pieces. Both take place in totalitarian states so stifling that, by the end of Far Away propaganda may be the new reality. At the same time, both are funny -- and in two scenes, hilarious. Edgar and Annabel are characters in a life and death script played by rebels plotting to overthrow the government. Far Away follows Joan from age 11 to late 20s, and the spread of propaganda, like a black fog, into her genetic code. Ion Theatre's opening was a bit spotty (both plays make extreme demands on actors), but the production should settle in. Fine performances by Samantha Ginn, young Abby DeSpain, Rachael Van Wormer, along with eerie lighting by Karin Filijan and creepy but appropriate sounds by Melanie Chen.
Worth a try.
