Dog Sees God
Good grief! Snoopy got rabies, killed Woodstock, and had to be put down. C.B. (Charlie Brown) hasn't been the same since. Problem is: his pals no longer live in Charles Schulz's cozy, sitcom world. They're alive today, swearing like drill instructors, toking herb, and swilling vodka in the school cafeteria. And Charlie may, or may not, be gay. Bert. V. Royal bills his update "a wicked comedy about the adolescent years of America's favorite comic strip gang." They question everything, including WWJD ("who wants jelly donuts?"). Those who remember "Peanuts" might get taken aback seeing Lucy as a handcuffed arsonist or Pigpen as a homophobic hypochondriac. And many more will have trouble with the forced ending, which crams message-laden melodrama into an often-funny script. Director Kym Pappas and InterMission Productions can't do much with the ending, but fill the other scenes with a crisp style and deadpan ironies. Wendy Maples and Samantha Ginn could take their characters, Tricia and Marcy, on the road as San Diego's latest "Kathy & Mo Show," they are that funny. The others perform with varying degrees of competence but blend well together as an ensemble. Kirby Solognier's set, painted flats, includes the iconic doghouse with a red roof.
Worth a try.
