DerbyWise
Circle Circle dot dot gives voice to locals who may not have one otherwise. The company's also becoming known for inventive sets and costumes. Their latest piece, about women on a roller derby team, has promise. It sketches out the conflict between amateur enjoyment vs. professionalism (and between "being strong and being a bitch"). But the script, by Katherine Harroff, is too talky, the characters too one note, and the scenes taking way too long to make obvious points. And the cast, with few exceptions, talks down to the floor much of the time and needs to enunciate better. The production's pluses: another eye-catching set (hot pinks and limes and a smart use of cartoony videos) and authentic, fishnet-laced, roller derby outfits.
