Death of a Salesman
In theatrical terms, Willy Loman miscast himself in a role he can no longer play. He put such effort into being a salesman - chipper appearance, always "up" - the role became his life. Now the greasepaint's streaking. Jeffrey DeMunn's opening-night performance as Willy, in the Old Globe production, sketched in the general portrait but played hit-and-miss with details. Willy's emotions came out single file (now crusty, now hopeful, now blaring) and rarely reflected the complex "world inside his head." A strong supporting cast makes this Salesman more of an ensemble show than most. They illuminate aspects usually relegated to the background. And Willy's dilemma recalls the adage about time: a person with one watch always knows that time it is; a person with two is never quite sure.
Worth a try.
