Damn Yankees
Back in 1955, when the Jerry Ross, Richard Alder musical premiered, the expression "damn Yankees" didn't just emanate from the South. The New York Yankees dominated baseball so much that, in the musical, kindly Joe Boyd sells his soul to the devil so the Washington Senators can have a power hitter -- aka. Joe Hardy -- and smear the Bronx Bombers. Sly, satanic Mr. Applegate grants his wish. But can Joe resort to an 11th hour escape clause? Of course he can. San Diego Musical Theatre's director James Vasquez, choreographer Jill Gorrie, musical director Don LeMaster (with a 21-piece orchestra!), scenic designer extraordinaire Sean Fanning, and a first-rate cast (including Steve Gunderson, Tracy Ray Reynolds, Neil Dale, Leslie Stevens, Chaz Feuerstine, David Kirk Grant, and impish Christine Hewitt) belt this "Heart"-filled show into the second deck.Critic's Pick.
