Crumbs from the Table of Joy
In Lynn Nottage's memory play, and like Tom in The Glass Menagerie Ernestine Crump looks back on her youth in 1950. Her father, still devastated from the loss of his wife, brought his two daughters to a basement apartment in Brooklyn -- and tried to seal them away from the world. Enter his wife's sister, Lily, a Marxist fireball from Harlem determined to open their eyes. So a good angel (actually too good, since he's so repressive) and an "evil" angel (in the good angel's eyes). Then Nottage shoots a diagonal across her canvas. Godfrey falls in love with Gerte, a German immigrant and no stranger to hardship, and sparks fly. Director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg has inspired top performances by Cashae Monya, Jennifer Eve Thorn, Deja Fields, Jada Temple, and Vimel Sephus.
