Company
Cygnet Theatre (aka. "Sondheim Central") has a winning production of Stephen Sondheim's musical interrogation of love and marriage circa 1970. Director Sean Murray and a crack ensemble cast cavort, as 35-year-old Robert considers commitment for the first time. Like an inquiring reporter, he questions five couples about the prospect. As Robert, Andrew Wells Ryder displays the appropriate uncertainty, though could be stronger vocally. The fast paced show comes to a halt three times: as Melissa Fernandes, Eileen Bowman, and Linda Libby bring the house down in three hilarious numbers. Jeanne Reith's psychedelic sherbet costumes, David Brannen's crisp choreography, and Patrick Marion's back-up band all contribute as well [note: due to popular demand, Cygnet has extended the show's run].
