Circle Mirror Transformation
Annie Baker's a daring playwright: she trusts her audience to piece this play together without Wikipedia explanations or author's messages. An unlikely quartet takes Marty's creative drama class in Shirley, Vermont. They talk in fragments, squelch feelings. During the six week course, they do acting exercises and grow, almost imperceptibly, like flowers. Thanks to Annie Hinton's acutely sensitive direction for New Village Arts, the subtexts weave the story. All five actors - Eddie Yaroch, Tom Stephenson, Dana Case, Rhianna Basore, and Sophia Richards - shine as individuals and ensemble players. Brian Redfern's set could be an actual community center shipped in from Vermont. Baker also dares to use long pauses and stillness as means of expression, where what isn't said can be more eloquent than what is.
