Camp David
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $29 - $95
Lawrence Wright's drama, about the historic Camp David Accords of 1978, is an "important" play, but not a well-written one. The script gets some of the grit of negotiations between Menachem Begin, of Israel, and Anwar Sadat, of Egypt, mediated by Jimmy Carter. But it and Molly Smith's amicable direction betray a commanding urge to be accessible and to entertain. The formulaic interludes, when Carter and wife Rosalynn compare notes, play like a sitcom and undercut tension and the intricate nature of a treaty between Israel and Egypt that resembles a Rubik's Cube with missing squares. Worth a try.
