California Suite
Neil Simon set his 1968 comedy Plaza Suite,/em> at New York's Plaza Hotel. As if the Left Coast demanded equal time, Simon wrote this sequel (1976). In four one-acts, guests at the Beverly Hills Hotel unravel amid elegance. The script calls for a posh combination living room/bedroom. At Scripps Ranch, scenic designer Chad G. Dellinger delivers, as does costume designer Melissa Coleman-Reed. Although the actors at times begin a scene with mid-to-late scene intensities, performances range from competent to impressive: Brian Salmon's Sidney, dry as an arid martini, Susan Clauson Andrews' initially gentle Millie, arcing from shock to stability, and the quartet's knockabout timing and physicality in the finale, a trash-the-suite farce.
Worth a try.
