Cabaret
3704 Sixth Avenue, San Diego, 92103
Cost: $49 - $59
For Ion Theatre'sCabaret,, director Claudio Raygoza splits the Emcee into two characters -- an older, androgynous woman, and her small servant boy -- to serve as two sides of a nation divided. Actors double as musicians, showcasing the abilities of this talented ensemble. Li-Anne Rowswell as Schneider and Morgan Carberry as Kost give inspiring performances, and Cashae Monya and Drew Bradford capture the heartbreak of Sally Bowles and Clifford Bradshaw. The choreography is unpoetic, and overt paralleling of Trump to Nazis patronizes the audience's ability to see the show's current relevance.Worth a try.
