Brownsville Song (B-Side for Tray)
6663 El Cajon Boulevard, Suite N, San Diego, 92115
Cost: $30 - $40
Kimber Lee's Brownsville, about the slaying of a promising young African American, is an important, though not that well written, drama. Eighteen-year-old Tray Thompson was a Golden Glover, a potential scholarship student, and a dynamo always moving forward. Was his death, on a street corner in Brooklyn, "gang related"? Was he someone else all along? The non-linear script has lulls. Moxie Theatre's gritty and graceful production, ably directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (recently awarded "Director of the Year for 2015") features top level performances by Sylvia M'Lafi Thompson (recently awarded "Actor of the Year/Female, 2015") and Cortez L. Johnson. Worth a try.
