Blood and Gifts
2910 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, 92037
We rarely see a play like this: a great big drama with sweeping themes and contemporary relevance (including a primer on our country's "pseudo-wars" and a back-story for our current involvement in Afghanistan). James Warnock, CIA station chief, makes promises, pulls strings, and lies almost non-stop as he escalates the Russia-Afghanistan war (1981-1991). He looks in charge, but is he? And by Act two of J.T. Rogers' drama, is anyone? Kelly AuCoin heads a tight ensemble as Warnock, who begins like a character from Graham Greene and ends like one from Kafka. For those unfamiliar with the conflict, the La Jolla Playhouse's program notes offer precise info. tol get you up to speed.
