Blithe Spirit
For a play said to have been written in a flurry of genius in six days by Noel Coward, who has become a British theatrical guru, Blithe Spirit is still terribly funny and remarkably resilient. Over 80 years old, it is as bright and frothy as an English seaside morning. At the North Coast Rep, director Rosina Reynolds has infused it with a new zany quality that only adds to its original comic allure. Ensconced in Marty Burnett's quintessentially British drawing room set, a superb cast holds forth with stunning characterizations. A standout is Joanna Strapp in the usually forgettable role of Ruth, the conservative second wife of novelist Charles Condomine. Indeed, she and J. Todd Adams's Condomine virtually hold the play together with their glib delivery of Coward's fast paced, sarconic dialogue.Critic's Pick.
