May flock together, but it's more complicated than that in Mark Acito's comedy. Male chinstrap penguins raise a chick, red-tailed hawks squabble about commitment, in English. Birds combines a kaleidoscopic view of personal relations with how the media blurs the boundary between public and private. At times it verges on being preachy (and cruel in its treatment of celebrities). But most often its very funny. It might be preachy-er (and flop into the Verboten Zone of Cute) if James Vasquez weren't directing a top notch cast (Steve Gunderson amazes in contrasting roles) with equally high caliber design work (Jeannie Galioto's costumes can flip a penguin into a red-tailed hawk in a jiff).
Worth a try.
