Big Fish
All his life 30-year-old Will Bloom has heard his often-absent father tell tall tales -- skyscrapertall, about mermaids, giants, even time spent in a whale's belly. Now his father is dying, Will and his wife are about to have a son, and Will wants to find out the truth about his father's lies. Andrew Lippa and John August's musical is based on the Tim Burton movie. The translation falls a bit short.Big Fishhas a "for all the ages" appeal, but the resolution's facile and the book favors the trees (retellings of each tale; some songs longer than necessary) for the forest (dramatic tension between father and son). Lamb's Players, director Deborah Gilmour Smyth, and choreographer Javier Velasco give the piece always inventive theatrics, and Brandon Joel Maier sings up a storm as Will's father, but the many side trips slow things down and make for an antsy sit.Worth a try.
