Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo
If you want your war plays/movies to be recruiting posters for the next one, then skip Ion's first-rate production of an amazing play. Rajiv Joseph has created an anarchy zone — in Iraq, 2003 — where predators prey and their ghosts pray for a salvation that may not exist. In a series of unpredictable scenes, he dissects the war (the only through-line being the search for a golden toilet seat). Ion's production matches the play's mania. Ron Choularton stars as a tiger's perplexed ghost (an atheist in the afterlife?). Claudio Raygoza a creepy hoot as Uday Hussien, eldest son of Saddam, and the ensemble work never flags. Nor do Karin Filijan's expert lighting and Melanie Chen's distant, haunted sounds.
