Awake & Sing
Clifford Odets' groundbreaking 1935 play about a Jewish immigrant family struggling to pursue their version of the American Dream glows wiith an insight into human interactions rarely seen today. Kristianne Kurner has designed an incredibly multileveled set and directed with masterful clarity. Everything about New Village Arts' production -- properties, costumes, and body language -- evokes the 1930s in the Bronx, so that one feels immersed in the era. Among the exceptionally talented cast, Sandy Campbell's determined mother, Bessie Berger, Eric Poppick's heart-breaking Jacob, and J. Tyler Jones' charismatic youth, Ralph, lead the audience through a highly emotional, thoroughly involving story. Critic's Pick.
