Animal Crackers
The new adaptation of the Marx Brothers' runaway stage hit of 1925 hits the Cygnet Theatre stage with verve and gusto. This is a versatile cast with all but one performer playing multiple roles. Sean Murray's direction is lively, as is the clever choreography by Russell Garrett, who also acts the hell out of two major supporting roles (Hives the butler, and Roscoe W. Chandler). Spoofing the world of arts patrons of the 1920's the script is creaky in many sections and overlong. Much of the humor is so mired in the vaudeville era that many jokes fall flat for today's audiences. But capturing the period to a T are Melinda Gilb as Mrs. Rittenhouse, Josh Odess-Rubin as the legendary Groucho, Samantha Wynn Greenstone as Harpo, and Spencer Rowe as Chico.Worth a try.
