An Inspector Calls
9783 Avenue of Nations, San Diego, 92131
J.B. Priestley's mystery/morality drama begins where comedies end. The upper class Birley's have it made. During a white-tie celebration a trench-coated, local gendarme arrives and announces that an impoverished woman committed suicide. Anyone heard of her? No, Birley responds. So the inspector pries, then patiently and systematically dismantles the entire family. Under Daren Scott's quite capable direction, Scripps Ranch offers a tight, suspense-filled staging. Fred Harlow and Jill Drexler head a strong cast, and D. Candis Paule gives the inspector a gently insistent voice, like the Master of Ceremonies for a collective comeuppance.
Worth a try.
