An Iliad
Homer's Iliad in an abridged - text by Denis O'Hare and director Lisa Peterson - but not diluted version. The narrator, called the Poet, must tell and retell the story of Troy (for therapeutic reasons, it turns out) in 100 minutes. Played with epic passion and torment by Henry Woronicz, the Poet works through his own rage (the anti-Muse of the piece?) as he recounts the wrath of Achilles, the death of Hector, the disillusionment of Helen, and the key events in the ninth year of the 10 year war. Scott Zielinski's lighting mirrors the poet's moods. Mark Bennet's extraordinary soundscape (performed by Brian Ellingsen on an amplified double bass) conjures up everything from the clamor of battle to the tattered heart of old King Priam.
