American Hero
2787 B State Street, Carlsbad, 92008
Cost: $25 - $36
This political comedy follows three workers as they are hired, trained, and employed at a franchise sandwich shop. The script is witty and smart, showing Americans down on their luck and in desperate need of the job. Unfortunately Bob, the owner, goes missing. With dwindling supplies and irate customers, the trio must dig deep to find a way to keep the shop open. The characters could easily have been stock typesbut director Kristianne Kurner brings out subtle, identifiable behavior in each. The acting is solid throughout, the music sets the mood, and the set, almost a character in itself, turns from a sparse, pre-opening mall location into a rogue sub-shop.Worth a try.
