Absurd Person Singular
Sir Alan Ayckbourn's three-act "black farce" (his term for it) takes place on three consecutive Christmas Eves. Each ends up in a kitchen. Over that span of time characters flip-flop and somber shenanigans prevail and over the years have proved difficult to stage. Not so at Scripps Ranch, where Brian Salmon has handled even the trickiest sequence of all - the second act's kaleidoscope of strange doings - with skill. Salmon needs to direct more. And soon! His cast is of a piece: three sets of couples from different social strata, performed by Jonathan Sachs and DeNae Steele, Fred Harlow and Teri Brown, and Charles Peters and Susan Clauson. All the males are chauvinists, knowing or unaware, and brutally both. The play was Ayckbourn's breakthrough hit in 1972. Given the off-putting attitudes of the males, let's hope it's a "period piece." Worth a try.
