The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey
14-year-old Leonard Pelkey urged everyone to come out, regardless of their sexual preference, and be more themselves. He lived what he preached, wearing berets, capri pants, and rainbow-colored platform sneakers, until he disappeared. James Lecesne's one-person show begins in the office of Chuck DeSantis, a "godforsaken Jersey Shore" gumshoe. In a gruff voice, DeSantis recounts the search for Leonard, victim of a homophobic hate crime. Lecesne, who wrote the 80-minute piece, playssharply drawn, often eccentric beings, many of whom warned Leonard to "tone down" his flamboyance, and all of whom he touched deeply. Lecesne spins from one to another in a tour de force performance that -- surprisingly, given the subject -- is often hilarious.Critic's Pick.
