A Room with a View
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
This world premiere musical, based on the novel by E.M. Forster, is nice — both very and merely. Lucy Honeychurch walks a tightrope between duty and a contrary heart that whispers "passion is sanity." The musical has a definite charm, an appealing score, and spectacular design work (Heidi Ettinger's sets recreate Florence, Italy, and Surry, England with mobile, Cubist postcards). But director Scott Schwartz keeps things on the sunny side by cartooning the forces of repression. In effect, Lucy's change becomes inevitable rather than earned. Along with snipping and tightening, the show needs to entertain less and have more at stake.
