A Midsummer Night's Dream: The Musical
Intrepid Shakespeare Company has reprised its hugely popular, musical version of Shakespeare's comedy of mistaken identities. The cast has many changes since last summer's hit. No matter. Everything rolls along with one surprise after another. Co-directors Christy Yael-Cox and Colleen Kollar Smith set the play to the music of the late-50s, early 60s. Every song fits so well you'd think the Bard meant them that way! (Puck says "what fools these mortals be"; so the Mechanicals sing "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"). David McBean's empyrean Oberon, Phil Johnson's hilarious Bottom, and Kevin Hafso-Koppman's devious Puck head a stalwart cast. The musical brims with such energy and so many smart choicesit merits a long life after this mid-summer staging. Take it on the road!
