For the last eight years, teenage Olivia's mother, Beatriz, has been denied visitation rights. So Beatriz semi-kidnaps her daughter, and they hit the road to see new sights and discover each other. Playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes combines sobering themes with playful comedy. Mo`olelo's opening night had yet to mix the two effectively, often overplaying the comedy. Marila Maschion's videos and young Hannah Rose Kornfeld, as Olivia, were ready and able. This Seema Sueko–directed production should be as well, once it settles in.
Worth a try.
