Stile Antico: Palestrina in the Eternal City
The San Diego Early Music Society welcomes back Stile Antico for the performance of their program Palestrina in the Eternal City. The twelve-piece vocal ensemble will celebrate both its 20th season and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s 500th birthday. The program explores the music Palestrina would have sung at the Sistine Chapel, the changes in his style demanded by the Counter-Reformation, his tragic personal life, and his influence on his successors. The repertoire includes several of Palestrina’s most beloved and timeless motets, gems by other leading composers active in Rome.
The San Diego Early Music Society was founded in 1981 to showcase music of the medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance periods. Every year, the Society brings in talent from across the globe to perform on period instruments in venues around the San Diego community.
